Providing Hearty Meals
Date: April 7, 2020
Numbers can speak volumes as with many other things. One number stands out as part of
an amazing story of dedication to our community. Dare County Schools has served over
9,000 meals in various sites across the county due to the local school closures as a result of
COVID-19. This free meal program was due to the hands and feet of many, including
Kelleta Govan, Alex Chandler, child nutrition staff and bus drivers. The program is
provided for all children under the age of 18 living in Dare County, not just students!
Community outreach efforts such as these fill not only the tummies of our children but our hearts, too. Changes were implemented to this program to continue to reduce the potential risk and exposure of COVID-19 to staff and all those in our community.
Beginning Thursday, April 9, 2020 “Grab and Go” breakfast and lunch meals can be picked up on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Town of Manteo at Manteo Elementary School from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM. The meals will be packaged to cover multiple days. The meal program will be available as long as schools are closed under the Governor’s Executive
Dare County Schools are helping in a great way with the effort to stay healthy and happy during a challenging time in our community. They are not only teaching our children math, science and more, but teaching us all about leadership and commitment.
